I really like Oliver Jeffers' books - there's an adaptation of this one.......and Kathak Stanzas is on again - brilliant Indian dancing for all to enjoy and take part in...

It's been a hectic summer...hence no blog posts for quite a while! I was the arts + crafts teacher for 1 week for PAC (Performing Arts Club) for the second year running which both my two mini mills took part in....the theme this year was "around the world in a scarf and slippers"! We were oversubscribed which was amazing. My classes made the props and costumes for the show which they got to keep - a very hectic week but the children had brilliant fun. Get your kids booked in for next year!!! 1st week of summer hols!!!

Then it was full on holiday clubs and meeting up with long lost friends, painting the spare room and my studio and finally going somewhere very hot! Tenerife!!! The girls had a ball...

...and it was all topped off by my little brother's wedding this weekend just gone - a 3-day event which took most of the summer getting organised and shopped for!!!.....decorating my mum's house ready for saturday's religious ceremonies and mendhi (henna) night, and sunday's arrival of the bride!

...so my new term's resolution is to try and keep this blog updated a bit more regularly, which let's face it, won't be hard to do!!!

I'm just so happy that my iris has bloomed even better this year and by happy coincidence, when you look at them from one way, the colours look fab with the blue/purples of the lavender and ceanothus behind! When you look at them the other way, there's a nice contrast with the lime green of the lady's mantle. Not quite Chelsea I know but I just wanted to show them off a bit!!! Got them from the lovely man at Sunnyside Nursery - you should check him out, he's brilliant AND local!!!

One of my favourite garden designers, Cleve West, not only won a gold medal but also won Best In Show at Chelsea Flower Show today, and I'm very happy for him! I've always liked his approach to gardening and garden design - and if you're an allotment fan, you need to take a look at his! If I ever had the chance to have one myself that looked even half as good as his I'd be a happy bunny! If parsnips in flower are good enough for Chelsea, then they're good enough for me - I just thought I'd share that with you!!!

Had my new stuff at the Ashridge Garden Party fundraiser yesterday....things did not start well - wind AND rain do not a happy stall holder make! But evetually the sun came out as did the crowds plus many friendly faces popped over to say hello!!! Thanks for coming to show your support - it's always deeply appreciated even if I don't show it at the time as I'm usually overwhelmed by either punters or the fact that I'm still standing and smiling!!!

This year, the pictures that stood out for me were by this artist Zara Woods (aka Woody). I liked so much I bought a limited edition print and some cards!! If only I won the lottery!!..

In total contrast, this lady must have the patience of a saint and the most steady of fingers!!Seiko Kato produces these images by cutting out details within books, in this instance, from Victorian medical books, drawings and encylopaedia, and making them into a collage on an impressive scale!!! (skull - 'subterranean' and detail)...

I have a thing about typo and alphabets!!! I even bought a limited edition alphabet by this lady. Jessica Hische is a typographer and illustrator, specialising in hand- drawn lettering..

Sarah Arnett had some lovely colour combinations in her nature inspired prints....

I liked the story-telling in Paul Blow's prints....

It's Nice That curated an illustration event with artists drawing live (amongst them was Tom Gauld but more of him later!!) and their illustrations could be purchased there and then!! Soju Tanaka's drawings were lovely but I couldn't get a photo - reminded me a little of Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki (more of that in another post!)...

I'd already blown my budget and I hadn't even got to the shop (Concrete Hermit - vouchers most welcome!) but here are two images that made me smile AND that came out OK in photos (I wasn't tall enough for some!!)

Pick Me UP - 2nd edition (part 1)

I had the pleasure of Mrs.Cheese's company for a trip to London's beautiful Somerset House yesterday to see this brilliant exhibition again this year. The artists involved in Pick Me Up are a truly talented bunch, and it was nice to chat to them about their work - very inspiring.

Jaguarshoes Collective showcased some artists....these are by Arran Gregory (totem pole at virginia water/screenprint) and print by Marcus Oakley (untitled).

Anthony Burrill had an open studio at this year's show.

Visitors were encouraged to create 'fanzines'....brilliant for kids!!! Here's Mrs.Cheese hard at work and wall of finished 'fanzines'.

A Mad Hatter's Tea Party

It was our mini-mills' 4th birthday party yesterday and we invited her friends to a Mad Hatter's Tea Party! It took a bit of manic organising as we only decided what to do a few weeks before but I think we got away with it!!! Thanks Adam for helping to make the large tea-pots, keys and signs and for having to get up quite high to stick them on the ceilings - a big thing for someone who hates heights, especially whist standing on a rickety step ladder! Here are pics from the party....firstly you need to go 'down' the rabbit hole!

Thanks to Gabriella (the Mad Hatter) for entertaining all 25 kids for 2 hours (a small break whilst they had tea!) - the kids were thoroughly entertained!

The tea-room is all set for the tea-party (thanks to my family for loaning teapots and cake stands and plants!).....

Thanks to 'Uncle Joe' for making the delicious red velvet birthday cupcakes and for decorating them just how I imagined! (I apologise for bombarding you with pics of what I wanted!!!)....

I had made some jam heart tarts (I was the Red Queen so just living up to the part!) but these lemon-flavoured iced biscuits are my favourite - I enjoy decorating cakes and biscuits but cannot make the things to save my life! So I cheated and bought some lemon biscuits but I'm such a wimp as my fingers starting hurting after the first few!!...

Everyone got a themed party-bag - a huge thankyou to Elaina at Bowcocos for the fabulous gifts for the girls (badges and playing cards for the boys)....

KATHAK STANZAS - dance and mythology

We went to see this wonderful session of kathak dancing at the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank the other weekend, which formed part of the IMAGINE children's festival over the half term week.(I apologise now for the out of focus moments!)

Gauri Sharma Tripathi is the southbank artist in residence, and she put on a brilliant show/workshop of traditional South Indian kathak dancing and told stories of Indian mythology in which we could all take part.

My highlight was the music in the last dance routine -"KANYA" by Niraj Chag...beautiful! (He was also responsible for the music for BBC Radio 4's modern dramatisation of the Indian epic The Ramayana which was fantastic - my girls were thoroughly engrossed with it). I've been busy working a few commissions;

This is a boy's scarf order from a friend in Switzerland, handknitted in black + grey twist with lime green stripes. It's a short scarf where one end goes through a loop, so there aren't long ends to worry about.

A canvas commission for a friend who had twins, Hattie and Ted, made from pre-loved fabrics and hand stitched onto canvas.

I was given a top by a customer which her daughter used to wear when she was little. She really liked the print and it had sentimental value so I made some bunting, a corsage and a canvas using that fabric. Now my customer has a unique collection which is special to her and her daughter, instead of packing the top away.

There's a fantastic looking festival for kids for this half term fun at the Southbank Centre. From Charlie Higson reading aloud from his latest adventure story book to Arlene Philips talking about dancing to South Asian Kathak dancing and traditional Indian mythology... and ending with a puppet show of Polly Dunbar's brilliant story "penguin"...p p perfect!!!
Some are events are free, but it's such a lovely place to take kids to anyway at any time....even if you just go for cake and tea!!!

sunflower seeds

Finally managed to go see the Unilever Series latest installation at Tate Modern the other day, by Ai Weiwei - "sunflower seeds".

The floor of the Turbine Hall is covered with literally millions of life-sized sunflower seeds hand-crafted in porcelain.
"Sunflower seeds invites us to look more closely at the 'Made in China' phenomenon..."

It was amazing to see this this carpet of 'seeds' - and it was a very interactive sculpture. Check out the link for more information and the whole philosophy behind this installation.

"Focus on... customising clothing"

I've been extremely busy refashioning and customising clothes for children and it's been really rewarding seeing clothes that were once destined for the bin or charity shops evolving into a "new" item, and I haven't left the boys out this year!
I've also expanded my age range depending on what I find, so there is clothing for babies as well as tops up to age 8. Each one is totally unique so no two are the same.

I've continued with my "wing" tops which proved a best seller last year!! So there are more of these, now with detachable wings making the tops machine washable...

New for this Summer are the customised tops for boys and girls...

Girls' refashioned tops using fabric from other clothing and some with print/applique designs, some with trim details like ribbons, fabric inserts, and detachable corsages as well as replacing the buttons with vintage ones...

Boys' tops have been printed with Monsters and Cars! and additional stitching details, and some refashioned tops as well - all new for this summer! (Let's not mention the England football tops I printed!!)

It's been really fun coming up with new ideas to breathe fresh life into once loved items - an exciting way to recycle and customise.
If you have any items of clothing you wish to be upcycled then please just contact me - customised orders are most welcome (look out for a "focus on...customised orders" coming soon) and you'll have a unique and special item made just for you.
On a more serious note, as always, if you have anything you're getting rid of, from clothing to bedding, from ribbons off price tags to odd buttons, then please contact me - it saves items going into landfill and the charity shops from being overloaded - thankyou.

"focus on...that smells nice!"

Just in case you thought I've been slacking, I thought I'd show you what I've been up to lately and that I have been busy! This lot is ready to be made into fragranced hangers once they've been filled with lavender, and with rose which is new for this summer. Hang them up in the room, in wardrobes, or use in drawers to keep your smalls smelling sweet!
The lavender comes from my mum and mum-in-law's gardens which would have been destined for the compost heap! The rose has been kindly passed on by a florist friend, which would have been binned!
It's been a great way of using up scraps of fabrics, and I like putting together unusual colour/pattern combinations.

The ribbons I use are also recycled from various sources, mostly from packaging. I save the ribbons from the labels you can get on some clothes, and even from some bags!(Well, the more posher ones!!) So remember me next time you go shopping - don't throw away the ribbons from the tags/bags...pass them onto me! Better than being in a landfill! So you see, actually every component that goes into making these is reused and recycled.

This summer, I've decided not to leave the boys out, so there'll be rocket and star shape filled hangers, and butterflies for the girls.

They make a lovely gift at any time of the year - lavender and rose for spring/summer, christmas spice for, well, christmas!

I must admit I get completely immune to the smell when I'm sewing them - think my nose completely zones out! But they've proved to be amongst my best sellers - the christmas spice hangers sold out pretty much straight away last year and just one hanger makes a room smell divine! I'll post photos of the finished products soon, so keep checking back...meanwhile, back to more sewing!

somerset house - "pick me up" (part 1)

I was really happy we got to go to this exhibition today (last day) and saw some beautiful work by some very talented people, so I thought I'd share with you pictures of some of my favourites.

It was very interesting to see Rob Ryan at work - he had an 'open studio' where you could watch him painstakingly hand cut-out his illustrations for printing - I'm not sure I'd have that much patience! Amazing to see it close up.

And I really liked Claire Scully's works....amazing......

"focus on...PONCHOS"

The minimills ponchos have been a very surprising success story! so I thought it was as good a place as any to start these mini features.

They have proved to be a perfect accessory for the sunny spring weather at the moment, and can be worn with just about anything.

Our minis have been wearing theirs' when there's been a bit of a chill in the air in the mornings, as a very 'girlie' alternative to a cardi or jacket.

They have been knitted on my handflat machines in yarns which have been rescued from various sources, in a variety of knits and weights, depending on the season; so for Autumn, they were made in a thicker yarns on the chunky gauge;

Whilst in Spring, the new lines have been knitted in lighter weight yarns, some in lace effect knits, and I decided to use double buttons.

It's been really lovely to be able to use unusual and different combinations of colours, so that each poncho can be as different from the next wherever possible, to maintain the 'uniqueness' which is integral to my ethos. Sometimes, when the yarn used for the actual poncho is rescued, there is a limited supply, therefore I may only be able to get one poncho made out of what I have, which in turn makes that item unique, as does the use of vintage buttons. It gives each piece a real sense of individuality.

And then mills&bloom nicked the idea and made a grown-up version!

They sold out last Autumn, and there are only a couple left from this Spring's collection, so if you're interested, contact me for more details, it's no problem.

Pamper Night

I had a stall at Westfield's Pamper Night yesterday. It was a lovely atmosphere and the gorgeous fragrances wafting from the therapy rooms almost sent me into a blissful coma! It was very busy, and I did well for my first "pamper night" - thank you to all my friends who came to support me, and some even bought my stuff!!! I had fun with ideas for display - thanks to Mr.Mills for designing the signage - and I loved using green, white and yellow as highlights for a Spring theme. Thanks Mrs.Cheese for the loan of the "lady" - didn't she do well! One customer bought everything I displayed on her!! How much you charging? You've got her well trained!

The wristwarmers are a welcome addition to jackets, especially first thing in the morning on the school run when it's still a bit chilly but we'd like to banish the winter coat after having to wear it for SO long!

The knitted ponchos are perfect for our Spring weather when it's warm enough to ditch the winter coat but the girls still need a little something special to feel cosy, especially on the fresh Spring mornings.

The easter eggs make a great table centre piece or in the hallway - and come lovingly packaged in their own egg cartons!

The little posies of 'everlasting' flowers are great for those who kill off any living thing in a pot (me!) and also for areas in the home where nothing will blossom - I have mine in the bathroom as they don't mind whatever the temperature...so well behaved!

Thanks to the ladies of Westfield who organised a lovely evening.

Here are some of my easter eggs and fabric flowers, made using vintage fabrics and buttons.

The flowers come with the vase which were an antique shop find, and as such, the bunches of flowers are a limited edition, so once they're gone, they're gone!

The eggs come in sets of 6!! and no two sets will be the same.

I'm going to be selling these along side my other wares at Westfield School's Pamper Evening on Friday 19th March, 7.30-10pm - a kid-free shopping evening with much deserved mini pamper treatments available. Contact me for details.

ok - I've finally started a blog! I'm under no illusion I'm going to be able to keep this updated on a regular basis, but I will try to post photos of my work and let you know where/when I'll be showing my stuff.
